Rhetorical Theory for Writers
Rhetorician Spotlight
I geared this project toward people studying writing and communication like me. I decided to make a pamphlet and tried to keep it visually interesting and avoid large blocks of text. I also tried to clearly group related information together visually. I did not learn what rhetoric truly was until very late in my college career, so I included Rice's definition in the first page of content. I quoted Rice a few times because he summed up concepts in a way I thought students would understand well, such as where I used his words to close the social media section.
Rice's perspective opened my eyes to several rhetorical devices that are constantly right in front of me. The characteristics of digital writing and social media language are glaringly blatant to me now that I have read his work. His perspective is refreshingly modern and simple.
This project gave me valuable experience in familiarizing myself with someone's vast catalogue of theory and condensing it to share with others. It also allowed me to attempt to enact some of Rice's concepts in the presentation of his work, such as nonlinearity of information, fluid topoi, and visual design. Rice's notions of visual elements informed my definition of rhetoric.
